Dissertation
This dissertation was written in 2003. Content is old and unmaintained.
I spent 3 years studying computer science at the University of Bradford, UK, My final year project was self created and was titled
“Investigation into Instant Messaging and Feasibility of
a J2ME Instant Messenger Client”
This is where most of my J2ME knowledge was built up, it resulted in a ‘MT50 J2ME MSN Instant Messenger client for a mobile phone running on GPRS’.
I have included my 50 page project report for people to read if they so desire, link at the bottom of the page. Before that I have included my abstract.
Abstract
Instant messengers are becoming an increasingly popular way to communicate. One of the main reasons for this is the simplicity of communicating to many users at once. Currently no implementation exists for a limited device phone.
This project aims to critically analyse current instant messenger protocol implementations in order to test the feasibility of a portable instant messenger client running on a limited device phone. This will enable a user to have an online presence outside the use of a desktop PC on a relatively cheap device.
The client will be a version of a desktop PC instant messenger running on a mobile phone over the internet. This project will utilise J2ME (Java Two Micro Edition) technology for the programming platform, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) technology for communication across the internet and MD5 (Message Digest 5) technology for encryption when needed.
The most efficient protocol for this project was found to be MSN.
This project has proven that an online presence using limited device mobile phone instant messaging is possible over GPRS wireless internet technology using a desktop PC instant messaging protocol.
Source code is not available online as I am still developing it into a very usable application. However if your interested in helping or anything get in contact
Example of application in action
